I CAN Expo 2025: Australia’s Biggest Event for Autistic Youth
Written by an autistic mentor for I CAN Online
Back in 2015, I CAN Network was newly formed; those of us who worked there were mostly young autistics ourselves who had grown up surrounded by quite negative perceptions of autism.
What drew many of us to the Network was its vision of a more positive and strengths-based view of autism; and it was from this that our first I CAN Expo was born; an event for autistics to come together and showcase our skills, talents, and all the other positives of our autism.
What is I CAN Expo?
It’s a day where we book a large space where the mentees of our school programs can give talks and presentations on their interests and meet others like themselves.
Over the years, we have seen everything from booths dedicated to LEGO and sensory toys to talks about History, Animals, Manga, Dungeons & Dragons, and more. It’s a chance for young autistics to show what makes them so uniquely awesome, to express their passions and interests in a supportive environment, and to get to know others who are on a similar wavelength. Think of it like a one-day pop up museum of autistic knowledge and expertise, a showcase of all that’s awesome about our mentees.
Who Can Attend?
The Expo is open to mentees in our high school programs, and takes place once a year; this year, we will be convening on the 9th of October, at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.
As somebody who has attended the Expo since it began in 2015, there is really nothing else quite like it; the vibe is just so magical, with so much passion, enthusiasm, and courage on display, and I always learn so much from it. It really is an unforgettable experience, and one I highly recommend to anyone.
Whether your child is a Swiftie, loves to draw, or is passionate about AFL, our groups offer a comfortable, strengths-based pathway to connection.
How You Can Join
You can see a variety of talks and presentations from previous Expos on our YouTube Channel. We can’t hope to see you there!
