Transition to Higher Education

An online program supporting autistic/neurodivergent students as they transition from high school into university, TAFE, or other post-school pathways.

Starting 19th of January.

Our Transition to Higher Education Groups are designed to support autistic/neurodivergent students preparing for life after high school, whether that’s university, TAFE, or another post-school pathway. These small-group online sessions provide a safe, supportive space to explore the next big step with confidence and clarity.

Led by relatable, trained mentors with lived experience of autism and higher education, this program empowers young adults with practical insights and proven strategies to confidently navigate the exciting, yet often challenging, transition to university or TAFE life. Mentors share their own experiences of studying, self-advocacy, and independence, helping to build a sense of belonging and empowerment within the group.

Although this group operates under our Cycle or Online program offerings, it’s completely standalone with its own tailored curriculum, mentors, and community. It is online and attendees meet on Zoom – same time, same mentors, for daily 60-minute sessions. Each 60-minute session builds on the last, offering structured guidance, peer connection, and practical tools students can apply immediately. It’s a place where participants can be themselves, ask questions freely, and develop skills for life beyond school.

Over the course of the program, participants will build a metaphorical “toolbox” of transition skills to support a confident and successful start to higher education. Topics include:

  • Developing skills to navigate new and unfamiliar environments
  • Building capacity to manage stress while balancing academic and personal life
  • Becoming familiar with timetables, course structures, and communication platforms
  • Developing support and advocacy systems to prepare for increased independence

This NDIS-friendly program is ideal for students finishing high school in 2025 or 2026 who want to prepare for the next stage of their education in a supportive, neurodiversity-affirming environment.

This resource shares glimpses of five autistic and multiply neurodivergent young adults who recently attended Victorian government secondary schools. Each journey is unique, yet they all highlight the same truth: having champions – teachers, leaders, or key staff – makes all the difference.
