I CAN Online: Interest-Based Groups for Autistic Young People
Written by an autistic mentor for I CAN Online
TL;DR: Autistic interests aren’t a “nice to have”. They’re core to identity, learning, and connection. I CAN Online runs moderated, interest-based groups (think Dungeons & Dragons, Anime, Pokémon, Drawing & Art) where autistic young people meet like-minded peers and thrive.
Why Interests Matter (From Someone Who Gets It)
For those of us who are autistic, our interests are a core part of who we are. They bring joy, energy and focus, and they help us get through tough days. Growing up, I didn’t have a space like this. As a young autistic person, I would have absolutely loved it. Now, as a mentor, I see the sheer happiness and confidence that spark when people connect over something they love.
The Science-Backed Bit
Special interests are like oxygen for some of us. In oxygen-rich environments life flourishes, and when we engage our interests, learning sticks and motivation rises. I learned early that if I could connect maths, or any tricky subject to my interests, school became not only easier but actually fun. Interests can unlock the full power of our magnificent brains.
Inside I CAN Online’s Interest-Based Groups
At I CAN Network, we understand how vital interests are and how magical it is to find others who share them. That’s why I CAN Online offers facilitated groups on topics like:

Sessions run on Zoom and are moderated by trained I CAN mentors (many of us are autistic). Groups focus on belonging, peer connection and strengths, so participants can show up as their authentic, unapologetic selves.
What Autistic Young People Gain
