School Program Mentor Position
(Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award, Level 1)
We have an exciting opportunity for people to join our team in the role of Mentor, delivering the I CAN Network Mentoring Program to school students in Bendigo and Echuca, Regional Victoria:

Our Mentors:
- Are Autistic themselves OR passionate about using life experiences with young people to change the narrative from I CAN’T to I CAN for Autistic children and teens
- Love to go into primary and secondary schools and get paid to have discussions, do fun activities and play games with Autistic students, that empower them with optimism, belonging, self-acceptance, pride and confidence.
- Are happy to jump in the car, put on your favorite song or enjoy the quiet time while driving to and from schools (Driver’s License and own transport preferred)
- Work in an environment with a 50% difference, meaning a minimum of half of our staff are Autistic.

Lead Facilitators – Greater Geelong and Mornington Peninsula
- Reviewing staff performance in school programs
- Content Development
- Training Facilitators and Mentors on service delivery
Casual position – SCHADS Level 5
We are looking for an individual who wants casual employment and who can easily access schools across Greater Geelong and Colac Otway, or the Mornington Peninsula and surrounds (current driver’s license and car desirable). We need an individual who is sensitive to the support requirements of people with disability, and highly confident and experienced with group facilitation.
You have a genuine passion for the individual strengths of autistic/ neurodivergent students. You will be able to lead by example, deliver programs in schools and train colleagues on student engagement techniques.
From a practical sense, you will possess:
- Proven track record working in schools, such as in a teaching or allied health role
- Understanding of program design
- Content development experience
- Group facilitation experience
- Scheduling and Rostering experience
- Stakeholder relationship management and staff supervision experience (e.g. good skills with giving and receiving feedback)
- Strong administrative and IT skills
About the Role
Reporting to either the Customer Service Manager – Regional Victoria, or Customer Service Manager – Greater Melbourne, the Lead Facilitator will be responsible for the following:
- Supporting the Customer Service Manager, particularly with program quality and staff training
- Reviewing staff performance with program delivery
- Improving content and materials
- Scheduling, designing and delivering staff training on service delivery
- Scheduling I CAN services, as directed by the Customer Service Manager/ Lead
- Delivering high quality mentoring programs and speaking engagements

About You
We are looking for a recent school leaver who can relate to the experiences of school students, and who wants to be developed into a mentor and speaker for I CAN Network in which they would promote the purpose of I CAN and the Victorian Department of Education’s Disability Inclusion reform. From a practical sense you will possess:
- Strong connection to the unique strengths of autistic people
- Relatability to the experiences of school students
- Willingness to learn, and to embrace feedback
- Willingness to embrace the I CAN Network mentoring program and deliver group mentoring programs
- Willingness to represent neurodivergent young people at I CAN/government meetings including the Autism Education Strategy Advisory Group
- Openness to public speaking training, and to speaking to audiences of school students, parents and teachers
About the Role
Reporting to a Customer Service Manager, the Mentor (Disability Inclusion Ambassador) will co-deliver group mentoring programs and deliver speaking engagements (eventually solo) as an I CAN Mentor. The successful applicant will be able to relate to the experiences of young autistic individuals and have a genuine passion for supporting the individual strengths of autistic young people.
Responsibilities of the Mentor (Disability Inclusion Ambassador) include:
- Mentoring autistic young people and planning/running activities during group mentoring sessions with the support of a Program Facilitator;
- Contribute to the development of practical resources which can be promoted to all Victorian government schools;
- Represent neurodivergent young people at I CAN Youth Advisory Group meetings (four per year);
- Contribute to the I CAN Supporting Resources Project by reflecting on time as a student in government schools.
Depending on availability, the successful candidate will work in our I CAN School SchoolⓇ Mentoring Program (sessions run at schools or in the community throughout the day) and/ or in our I CAN Online Program (sessions run online during the afternoon or evening).
To work in our I CAN SchoolⓇ programs a Driver’s Licence and own transport is strongly preferred. Successful candidates may be offered work across both the I CAN SchoolⓇ and I CAN Online Programs.
The commitment involves a fixed number of hours per mentoring session and sessions are run weekly. Please refer to the Position Description for full details.

I CAN Online Program Mentor
We need Mentors located in Victoria, New South Wales or Queensland to deliver our I CAN Online Programs which include Dungeons and Dragons campaigns.
I CAN Network, Australia’s largest autistic-led organisation, is looking for people with a lived experience of autism and knowledge of Dungeons and Dragons to assist with the delivery of our I CAN Online group mentoring programs. The successful applicants will be able to relate to the experiences of young autistic individuals and have a genuine passion for supporting the individual strengths of autistic young people.
Reporting to a Customer Service Manager, Mentors support the delivery of group mentoring programs for a select group of young autistic individuals.
This involves assisting an I CAN Program Facilitator with the delivery of structured online group sessions which include games, discussions and activities.
Mentors will need availability for a minimum of 5-10-hours per week. Note that I CAN Online shifts occur in the afternoon and evening.
Successful candidates will need the following capabilities:
- Capacity to deliver the duties of the Mentor Job Outcomes Description;
- Implementation of child safety obligations;
- Self-awareness;
- Commitment to quality customer service;
- Basic organisational skills;
- Deliver scripted online group mentoring session plans;
- Intermediate-level knowledge of Dungeons and Dragons;
- Willingness to work across I CAN Online Programs, inclusive of the 6-week and 1-week programs;

What roles can I apply for?
Whilst most of our opportunities are for mentoring positions (entry level through management), our I CAN Network team includes a diverse range of roles. What is the time commitment involved in being a mentor?
The commitment of school-based mentors involves a fixed number of hours per mentoring session and availability during school hours for our I CAN School® programs.
The commitment of online group mentors also involves a fixed number of hours per mentoring session and availability on certain weekday evenings. We provide training and ongoing professional development for all team members.
Can I apply for a position if I’m not yet 18?
